Social Distance

The other night, my wife and I went out onto the sidewalk and measure out 6’ of distance. A guide for ourselves and others. Using my wife as a compass point, I tied a 6’ length of string and walked around her as she turned and we drew a circle 12’ in diameter. The circle spanned the sidewalk. Walking down the center of the sidewalk, strangers would be force to walk into the street or into a wall to avoid me.

I then had the notion to draw an overlapping circle - a person walking behind, and had a vision then of all these overlapping circles extending out.

Which I then obsessed on and worked it out in Adobe Illustrator…. beautiful patterns emerged, somewhat mind bending as the brain tried to work out the circles, triangles, ovals, and more.

If we ever get around to memorializing this event — I could imagine a public plaza tiled this way. Maybe some statues at a trio of points, masked, worried, looking at each other.
